Beyond Common Ground: Why Liberals and Conservatives Need Each Other
Alden Thompson was my undergraduate adviser at Walla Walla University, where I majored in biblical languages. He had a long-lasting and profound impact on my life. Our class, summer of 1979, invited him to give the commencement address. It was a little unusual to invite someone from inside the college. It was a good choice. He talked about riding the pendulum. The closer we are to the top, the easier the ride, i.e., come near to God and you’ll deal better with the swings of opinion.
Alden believes that it is good to have liberals and conservatives and many other sorts of people in the church. We shouldn’t be seeking to win over each other, but rather to discover strengths and weakness and combine our strength.
I believe that any Christian can find very helpful ideas in this book. Let’s learn to value one another and work together.
